ROYAL ALLOY GT2
Changzhou, China. January 2024
This being the first review in this new addition to our website, may I remind you that we currently stock 8 other brands alongside Royal Alloy, some of which will be watching the GT2 closely. I mention this to reiterate the need for a none bias approach from myself.
Having been honoured to take part in the recent launch of this new scooter in Changzhou, China, I’d like to start from within the scooter, from its core which is where Royal Alloys DNA can be found. I for one was very apprehensive about what was to be presented to us but upon sight of the first models off the production line my nerves were settled as it was obvious to all that this was not just another offering from Royal Alloy but an extension of the brand.

Moving onto the heart of the matter. Although specification is to be confirmed ( I was test riding a 150cc model) we are expecting, for the UK market, a 125cc Liquid Cooled single overhead cam unit offering a little over 14bhp @ 8,750 rpm with 12NM of torque at 6,750 rpm. Feeding the engine is to be a 9 Litre fuel tank situated underneath the floor runner offering a good centre of gravity to the scooter together with a range of around 108 mpg or 38 km/l. I feel comfortable that this will in turn offer a range more than 200 miles and whilst riding those miles the automatic start/stop system will be saving fuel all the way. In addition, the positioning of the tank allows for ample under seat storage.
The skeleton of the scooter is a solid steel tubular frame housing the essentials and in turn being covered with a high-quality ABS body which brings me back to the DNA of Royal Alloy. Of course, the GT2 is aimed at a different market to that of the GT, GP and TG rider but study the design and you will clearly see cues from both the GT and GP models seamlessly crossing over through side panels, the under-seat cooling vent, the headset, and headlight, the 12” colour coordinated spoked wheels and the king and queen style seat.
In addition to an array of colourways to cater for most tastes the GT2 is fitted with a very impressive list of safety features including all round ABS braking with traction control. High grip tyres with pressure monitoring system. High-definition LED lighting all round. The headlighting is very good indeed but I particularly like the rear light with it being extremely visible in all conditions which is a must have on today’s roads.

So far, my review presents to you a scooter that holds its own identity, oozes safety features, is quality built from the ground up with a nice power unit and well put together body. So, what about comfort?
This is a scooter that will be used everyday for commuting and around town and as it weighs in at around 140kg its suitable for loading up onto your motorhome for some exploring around the country and beyond, so it needs to be comfortable to ride. Again, it does not disappoint. In fact, I will go as far as saying its one the most comfortable 125cc scooters I've ridden.
I like the keyless technology which is something that I am used to on my car and one of my bikes. We also sell other brands scooters and bikes with this technology onboard but what I liked about this set up is the simplicity. Do you remember buttons? Those good old fashioned plastic things with a drawing on them telling you what they do? Well, you must press one on your key fob to let the scooter know you are there. You can also use it to locate your scooter in a busy carpark where I am sure in time there will be lots of other GT2’s lined up! |
You activate and disarm the built in alarm via a button too! This not only eliminates the technology on the scooter and in your key fob continuously seeking each other out which can create problems of its own as it does on some other brands vehicles, but I love the fact that you must engage with the scooter before popping your key fob into your pocket. Simple things….
The Royal Alloy GT2 is more than capable in its handling, it eases through corners, picks up power easily and instantly as you roll on the throttle and eases off as soon as you roll off thanks to the dual action throttle. If the weather turns and the temperature dips (it was bloody freezing in China during test riding) simply switch the heated grips and the heated seat and adjust to your comfort via the heat settings.
The TFT screen is simple, easy to read and informative in a noncomplicated way. You can link your phone via the inbuilt app to give you a stack of information and you can also “mirror” your phone to the screen to utilise apps that you are familiar with.
As a dealer, I am always looking at whats new, whats hot, whats not. I see loads of prototypes at the international shows, I see loads of new arrivals from all of the brands, but although it’s no secret that I have been passionately flying the flag for Royal Alloy since before their arrival, I can honestly say that the last time I felt this enthused about a new product and for where a brand is positioning itself was January 2018 when Carnaby registered the very first Royal Alloy in the UK which was in fact a GT125! Enjoy Life!
